The HERS (Home Energy Rating System) Index was established in 2006 by the Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET), the national association of home energy raters and energy-efficiency mortgage lenders, as an industry standard for measuring the efficiency of a new home.
It is also the nationally recognized system for calculating the energy performance of a home. Homes that score a 70 or lower on the HERS Index Scale (illustrated left) have superior energy performance compared to a standard home.
The U.S. Department of Energy has determined that a typical resale home scores 130 on the HERS Index, while a standard new home is awarded a rating of 100. Maronda Homes has a HERS Index score between 50 and 60 -- that is up to 40 percent more energy efficient than a standard new home.
