Columbus Commuter Guide: Best Suburbs for Downtown Workers

by Alexandra Sobek

Looking for the perfect Maronda Homes Community that provides an easier, less stressful commute to Downtown? Since Columbus is laid out like a wheel with spokes, your commute is all about which “spoke” you’re on. If you’re looking for a Maronda Homes community with the best path to Downtown, you should focus on the Southeast and Southwest corridors, where you can still find new construction within a 20-minute drive of the city center.

We’ve compiled a list of our communities in these areas to help make your dreams of owning a new home while having a simplified daily routine a reality.

The “Fast Track” (Southeast Corridor)

The Southeast side is often overlooked, but it offers some of the most direct access to Downtown via US-33. Unlike the major interstates, US-33 tends to flow more consistently during rush hour.

  • Spangler Farms (Southeast Columbus): This is the “gold medal” winner for proximity. Located just 8 miles from Downtown, it’s a quick 12–15 minute drive. It features modern townhomes, making it a great “lock-and-leave” option for busy professionals.

  • Chatterton Commons (East Columbus): Located about 12–15 miles out, this community sits right near I-70 and the Blacklick Creek Greenway. You can be in the heart of the city in about 15–20 minutes, depending on the I-70/I-270 interchange traffic.

  • South Hampton (Canal Winchester): A bit further out, but because it’s positioned right on the US-33 corridor, the commute remains a predictable 23–25 minutes. You get the small-town charm of Canal Winchester without a grueling drive.

The “Direct Route” (Southwest Corridor)

The Southwest side offers a straight shot into Downtown via I-71 or I-270, avoiding the heavier congestion of the Northern suburbs (like Polaris or Powell).

  • Walker Pointe (Commercial Point): Located about 17 miles south, this is a “best of both worlds” spot. It’s quiet and rural, but the drive to Downtown is a straight shot up I-71 that takes roughly 25 minutes.

  • Autumn Grove & Langford Meadow (Grove City): Grove City is a commuter’s favorite. These communities are roughly 15 miles from Downtown. Grove City’s local access to I-270 and I-71 means you have multiple ways to navigate around accidents or construction.

The “North & Far East” (The Scenic Route)

  • Worthington Preserve (North Columbus): While closer to the action of the North Side, traffic on Route 315 and I-71 North can be dense. Expect a 25–35 minute commute depending on the time of day.

  • Borders Place (Pataskala): This is for those who want more space. It’s roughly 20 miles east. While I-70 is a direct route, the distance usually puts your commute in the 35–45 minute range.

Ready to find your dream home and simplify your commute? Many of these communities are close to selling out – don’t miss your chance to secure your home in one of Columbus’s commuter-friendly suburbs.
