Washington, D.C. Commuter Guide: Best Suburbs for DC Workers

by Alexandra Sobek

Looking for the perfect Maronda Homes Community that provides an easier, less stressful commute to DC? We have a strong presence in the Greater DC area, but the definition of “best” depends on how long you’re willing to sit in traffic and whether you prefer the Metro or the highway.

We’ve compiled a list of our communities in these areas to help make your dreams of owning a new home while having a simplified daily routine a reality.

The “Close-In” Option (Maryland)

If you want the shortest physical distance to the city, the Capitol Heights area is your best bet.

  • Community: Holly Springs

  • The Commute: Located just 3.4 miles from the D.C. border.

  • Transit Access: It is only about 3 miles from the Suitland Metro Station (Green Line) and the Capitol Heights Metro (Blue/Silver Lines).

  • Best For: Those who work at the Navy Yard, US Census Bureau, or Andrews Air Force Base.

The Northern Virginia Corridor

Northern Virginia suburbs like Bealeton in Fauquier County offer more living space, with the tradeoff of a longer commute to the Metro DC areas.

  • The Commute: Approximately 55 miles from downtown D.C.

  • The Routes: You’ll primarily rely on Route 28 or Route 29 to get to I-66. These roads are notorious for “stop-and-go” traffic before you even hit the highway.

  • Best For: Those looking for a suburban/rural feel with lower property taxes than Fairfax County.

The Value Commute (West Virginia)

For the best value, many commuters head west – to West Virginia! These are longer hauls (60–90 minutes), but are very popular for hybrid workers.

  • Communities: Huntwell West (Ranson, WV) and South Brook (Inwood, WV).

  • The Commute: Located near Routes 340 and 9. It’s about 30 minutes just to get to Leesburg, VA, and then another 45–60 to DC.

  • Transit Access: The MARC Train (Brunswick Line) has stations in nearby Duffields or Harpers Ferry that go directly into DC.

  • Best For: Remote or hybrid workers who only need to go into the office 2–3 times a week.

Many of these communities are close to selling out – don’t miss your chance to secure your home in one of Washington, D.C.’s commuter-friendly suburbs.
